About the Trumpet Fingering Chart

The trumpet is one of the most popular brass instruments, widely used in concert bands, jazz ensembles, and orchestras. The standard Bb trumpet uses three piston valves to change the length of tubing and produce different pitches.

Each valve lowers the pitch by a specific interval when pressed: the first valve lowers it by a whole step, the second valve by a half step, and the third valve by one and a half steps. By combining these valves, trumpet players can access the full chromatic range of the instrument.

The trumpet's range typically spans from F#3 (written) to C6, though advanced players can extend beyond this. Beginners usually start with notes in the middle register (C4 to G4) where the embouchure is most comfortable.

One important concept for trumpet players is the harmonic series. The same valve combination produces different notes depending on the player's embouchure (lip tension and air speed). For example, open valves (no valves pressed) can produce C4, G4, C5, E5, G5, and C6 — all part of the same overtone series.

This interactive fingering chart shows the primary fingering for each note, along with common alternative fingerings where available. Alternative fingerings can improve intonation or facilitate smoother technical passages.
